    Description

This is one of the most popular long focal length / Low-Power eyepieces we make.  The 72mm 2 inch Super-Plossl eyepiece is a superb Low-Power eyepiece with fantastic edge to edge sharpness and contrast !
This 72mm Plossl eyepiece was designed because of continual customer request for a super-low power Plossl for scanning in scopes that were just a bit to short on focal length for our super popular 85mm. When a scope has a central obstruction ( like a secondary mirror ) you start to lose contrast and sharpness below 35x. In a refractor you can go as low as you wish.
Here is an classic 4-element Plossl design eyepiece that will absolutely amaze you with excellent
    sharpness
and superb contrast and performance at a fraction of what you would expect to pay.
Low Power Astro-Scanning is one of the most impressive and enjoyable things you can do, and viewing from 35x to 55x with a wide-field Plossl it is like looking at millions of diamonds lying on a bed of black velvet cloth !
Russell Optics makes this 2 inch ,  72mm  Plossl  with high quality multi-coated low-dispersion lenses originally made for the military. Bought as "spare or replacement " lenses used in targeting systems, periscopes, and other optical equipment that was phased out with newer digital technology. They are new/old stock that were sold as surplus to make room for new equipment. 30mm eye relief and is threaded for standard 2 inch filters.
Russell Optics is Now the ONLY manufacturer that we know of that makes the Long focal length eyepieces  !!
Why you ask ?? It is simple really.... The demand from astronomers that want eyepieces over 40mm in focal length is not as big of a market place for the "Big-Guys" to invest their time and money.
*Please note.....on Telescopes with a central obstruction ( Like SCT's, Maksutov's, or Newtonians ) a basic rule of thumb is to keep the magnification above about 35x. Once you go below 30x you stand a chance of losing contrast. If your obstruction is larger than 20% of the primary you could also get a "ghost" image of that secondary mirror.
