In astrophotography, if you want to take successful astronomy photographs, accurate focusing is only one half of the story. The Astromania flip mirror makes it very simple to find both the exact focus point and also the correct positioning for your astronomy photographs. This small black box has a moveable flip mirror which shunts the light path 90° upwards or, alternatively, lets it pass through unhindered. This permits both a camera and eyepiece to be attached to the telescope at the same time. Lengthy focusing with a CCD camera is hence avoided. Focusing is possible within seconds, once the eyepiece and camera have been adjusted to each other. Setting Up the Imaging Flip Mirror Attaching the Imaging Flip Mirror to a Telescope Using the 1.25" Nosepiece: If your telescope features a 1.25" focuser or adapter, the easiest way to attach the Imaging Flip Mirror is by using the included 1.25" nosepiece. Using T-threads: Some telescopes feature focus adapters with exterior T-threads. If you are using such a telescope, you can attach the flip mirror body directly to the T-threads without using the 1.25" nosepiece. Remove the 1.25" nosepiece. Then carefully attach the flip mirror body to the T-threads. Attaching a CCD Camera to the Imaging Flip Mirror Most commercial CCD cameras have accessible T-threads. Remove the nosepiece of your CCD camera to reveal the T-threads. Attach the camera body to the flip mirror body by rotating the camera clockwise until tight. To change the camera orientation, unthread the camera counterclockwise only until you have reached the desired camera orientation. Then turn the knurled lock ring counter-clockwise against the camera body until the camera fits snug against the ring. Eyepiece Use The Imaging Flip Mirror should reach focus with nearly all 1.25" eyepieces. Simply insert your eyepiece into the 1.25" eyepiece holder and secure it with the eyepiece holder thumbscrew. Read more Adjusting the Lever Tension Keep the flip mirror lever in the “up” position to let the telescope focus on the camera. Flip the mirror to the“down”position to let the telescope focus on the eyepiece. With the flip mirror lever in the “up” position, focus your CCD camera using your telescope’s focuser. Locate the two silver socket head set screws (one on each side) located above the lever. Using the provided 1.5mm hex key, loosen or tighten the set screws as needed to reach the desired lever tension. Read more Adjusting the Flip Mirror Stop Angle To adjust the flip mirror stop angle: Locate the socket head set screw on the bottom of the flip mirror body. If the subject is above the center of the field of view (when facing the rear of the flip mirror), turn the set screw clockwise. If the subject is below the center of the field of view, turn the set screw counter-clockwise. Check your adjustment by comparing the CCD camera view with the eyepiece view. The subject should be centered in both views. Read more Care and Storage The mirror surface should only be cleaned on a minimal bases. You can occasionally remove dust with compressed air or a blower bulb. If you need to clean the mirror surface, first unthread the 1.25” eyepiece holder from the flip mirror body, use a cotton Q-tip with a drop of isopropyl alcohol or lens cleaning solution. To avoid excessive dust buildup, be sure to attach the dust caps prior to storing, and use a foam- lined accessory case. Store in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Read more

Always sharp: If you tilt the mirror to the 45 position, the object will then appear in the eyepiece and you will be able to precisely focus it as usual. The helical focuser on the flip mirror lets you make the eyepiece and camera exactly parfocal with each other. This means that both elements will be in focus at the same time.
An object that is accurately centred in the eyepiece will be simultaneously centred in the camera's field of view. You no longer have to worry about whether the object is correctly positioned on the chip - you know it will be.
An advantage with all cameras: No finder is provided with popular webcams or astronomical CCD cameras for helping position the object on the chip. Only by taking test exposures is it possible to achieve both sharp focus and the correct object position. The flip mirror is a big help here as the object has already been centred and focused 'remotely' on the chip via the eyepiece.
Connectability: The Astromania flip mirror has a 1.25" connector which will fit onto any standard telescope. The helical focuser will accept any standard 1.25" eyepiece. There is a T-2 thread provided on the camera side - the standard fitting for all cameras.
