    Contemporary Fan Shaped Chinese Oracle Bone Script Calligraphy

    Up for sale is the Chinese oracle bone script calligraphy on a fan, dated mid-20
    th
    century or earlier. The calligraphy written on a fan is signed “
    毘陵小雲
    ”, together with a seal stamp “
    尤秉


    ”, which was dedicated to “
    晋臣
    ” (
    袁奭
    , 1907- Unclear), who was a famous banker and art collector in Shanghai at the time.
    The artist
    尤秉綬
    (
    You Bingshou), or
    尤小雲
    (
    You Xiaoyun), mastering at the landscape
    paintings and seal script engravings in depth, was under the tutelage of
    張克龢
    (Zhang Kehe, 1898-1960), who was a famous painter and art connoisseur at the time.
    Oracle Bone Script (
    甲骨文
    , Jiaguwen), carved on tortoise shells or animal bones and widely used in pyromantic divination in the Shang dynasty (circa 18th - 12th century, BCE), was the earliest known form of Chinese writing which is directly ancestral to the modern Chinese script.
    The calligraphy attached to a board with phoenix bird (or Feng Huang) motif contains totally 56 oracle bone characters, starting with “
    歸依大士
    ---” which likely describes a Buddhism related message. Framed under glass, the calligraphy is with iron wire at the back and ready for wall hanging. Two marks are found to the back including the “Custom Framers Westport, CT” and an identification stamp in Chinese characters.
    Measures: Frame, 30” wide x 19 ½” high x thick; Fan part, 22” wide x 11 ¼” high. Condition: Very good, with some tainted spots to the fan paper and mild wood chip to the frame.
