Description
This auction is forEdmund Scientific (USA) 1.25-inch Rank Kellner 15mm. It will come with a non-years matching, but MODEL MATCHING original box from 1997-98 years. The eyepiece itself is from a 1988 catalog order.
The box dates to a time when Edmund Scientific became online capable and was Edmund Optics and coming across these boxes is hard to do because it was not a long run before the company went through more permanent changes; the biggest one in that they started making different eyepieces and had sources in China.
This eyepiece will give a generous 45-degree field of view with a comfortable 13mm of eye relief; it will be somewhat tight for eyeglass wearers, but on the plus side, this model is still VERY easy for newcomers to use as positioning of the eye at the focuser is not finicky for maximum enjoyment.
Beautifully built of solid milled, anodized aluminum and optical glass with a dyed rubber grip ring. Weighs exactly 2.4 ounces.
These modified Kellners are 3-element designed, but unlike the conventional Kellner, these give a wider field of view and do work extremely well in rich field telescopes, such as the f/4.25 Astroscan2001 and f/5.6 maksutov spotters, and Orion's Short Tube refractor line. Also great to use in 8-inch f/6 and 10-inch f/4.5 reflectors.
These eyepieces are very close to plossls as far as sharpness and primarily lose-out when going for contrast only because these RKEs are fully coated; not multicoated. Aside from Pentax and possibly the rare Takahashi Kellners, these are some of the very best 3-element designed optics money can buy. And though they will have some ghosting evident on objects with high surface brightness set against a black background, their eye relief is more comfortable over conventional Kellners.
As far as I know (and I've owned A LOT of telescopes of various designs) the RKE cooperates nicely with any major brand telescope from f/4 to f/18; be it a refractor reflector or cassegrain. In the kellner-class of eyepieces, this IS THE BEST one you can get and the genuine Edmund Scientific RKEs are now decades out of production.
Packed with great care. Higher price reflects that this eyepiece is a rare collectible and must be insured to all global locations. For my foreign friends, this cannot be shipped in a small flat rate box because the eyepiece box will NOT fit in it.
