Description
Larry Jansen (1920-2009) was a right-handed pitcher, and "key" member of the Giants' pitching rotation from the late 40's to early 50's. In all, he pitched 9 seasons in the majors for the Giants (1947-1954), and Reds (1956), appearing in 291 games, with a record of 122-89, 17 shut-outs, 11 saves, and a 3.58 ERA. Jansen was the 1947 N.L. ROY, and finishing 7th in MVP, with a 21-5 record, league leading .808 WP, and a 3.16 ERA. In 1950, he was 19-13, with league leading and career high 5 shut-outs, making the All-Star team, and in 1951, he was a career best and league leading 23-11, with 3 shut-outs, a 3.04 ERA, made the All-Star team, finished 14th in MVP, and was the winning pitcher in the 3rd & decisive game of the 1951 play-off between the Giants & Dodgers, when Bobby Thomson hit his famous walk-off HR, known as the "Shot Heard 'Round the World". Jansen pitched in 3 games of the 1951 W.S., with a 2-0 record. He battled back problems & arm injuries, which prohibited him from pitching in the 1954 W.S. He later was pitching coach for the Giants (1961-1971), and Cubs (1972-1973).
